There are some other way.

1. Just plug the printer to the laptop, install the driver and you can use it directly.

2. If your computer share in the same network, such as connected by HUB. you can share the printer in your desktop, by right click in the printer icon and select sharing.
After that, you add new printer in your laptop and select the network printer (not local printer), your computer will try to find available printer.
If it is found, install the driver and you can use the printer directly (but your desktop must be on)

3. If the printer and laptop has Bluetooth ability, you can connect directly to the printer, just read the manual, how to connect the printer using bluetooth (you can read your printer manual)

4. Buy printer sharing device, so you can connect both your desktop and laptop to the printer.

A couple of questions. First do you have a wireless network at your house? If so, on your desktop all you need to do is go to printers and faxes and then right click on your new printer and go to sharing, and make sure that Share this printer is selected and give it a name. try that. If not the just connect the printer to your laptop using a usb cable.

if both of your computers are connected to a network to access the internet you can run the network setup wizard on both if needed to be able to connect between the two pcs.and enable file and printers sharing between the two.
