Nothing is automatic. When you both go and apply for the license they will ask you what name you will use. After you are married (if you decide to take his name) you bring the marriage certificate to the social security office and to the dmv and they will issue new cards with your new name on it.

You have a lot of paperwork to amend in order to change to your married name. It doesn't happen automatically. You have to show all the different companies you deal with (driver's licence, insurance, memberships etc) that you have been married and advise them of your new married name. It can take a while to get through everyone who has your name listed somewhere.

You have to sign the marriage certificate and then go and fill out the paperwork for a new I.d. and or drivers license and also a new SSC but you do take his name as soon as you are married. Hope this answers your question

Not sure of all states, but in California, you have to apply for a marriage license. In the application the woman has an option to change her name (whether you want to keep yours, hyphenate yours and his, or take his name). Hope this helps.

Driver's license and social security card is all you have to change your name on.
Just remember to sign your new name as your signature after getting married...I kept forgetting to do that (lol).
