I and my girlfriend feel that roses are just so not thoughtful and too traditional so if any one else has some ideas it would be nice to hear them

Personally I love tulips, sunflowers and hydrangeas. Orchids are also very beautiful, and romantic.

Why not buy a pot plant that can be kept for a long time? One of those minature rose plants would be nice. Try to work out what her favourite flowers are and get them, alternatively match the colour of the bouquet to the colour of her room. Or what about getting a bunch of flowers and nestling a small gift between the stems? A pair of earrings or a necklace, or even a ring...

Good luck, I hope this helps you score brownie points!!

Someone once gave me thirty bunches of daffodills - it was so romantic and lovely. I'd been quite down, and miserable, the weather was dark and gloomy, and I came home to find my house filled with bright, happy daffodills. It was wonderful, and far more thoughtful than red roses. I wouldn't have turned my nose up at red roses (I love all flowers) but to me, they seem the least interesting of flowers, because they are so expected and stereotyped. I like yellow flowers, specially at this time of year. Plus, red roses are ridiculously overpriced, just because they're red roses.

I agree that red roses can be boring. They are beautiful flowers, but have become overused.

Each type of flower sends a different type of message. For example, red roses mean romantic love. But there are other types of flowers for romance, including gardenias and tiger lilies.

Here is an interesting article that gives other examples of flowers that represent romance: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/138232/the_hidden_meanings_behind_flowers.html

Why not do something really meaningful, lovely and thoughtful that is a higher plane from flowers. Why not use the money instead of on flowers and donate it to a needy cause. Flowers are lovely but it is nicer to give and receive them unexpectedly not when commercially we are told to do so.

If you and your girlfriend are discussing what flowers you should give her it doesn't sound very romantic to me anyway!!! Just take her to the shop and let her choose! My husband came in with 20 beautiful deep red so velvety roses this morning and i thought it was lovely. Each to his own i suppose. I particularly like red carnations with white gypsophelia.

Spring flowers - to remind you what a wonderful time of the year we soon have to look forward to: tulips, daffodils, hyacinths - all have a little scent and lovely bright colours.

Spring flowers are about life - they indicate the start of the growing season and the wonder of mother nature, life and love itself! So romantic!

A single orchid can be purchased in a small glass container from most florists - they are sooo pretty and smell nice too!

Edible chocolate flowers are just as good, they don't smell so good but taste divine!!

Red Tulips

In the language of flowers red tulips mean a declaration of love. What more could you want to say to the one you love?

Lillies are beautiful. What about a Bonsai plant?

Happy Valentines Day.
