Lasers are a coherent light source (all the photons are traveling together in the same wave front).
The photons are excited and together they increase in energy/quantity between 2 mirrored surfaces.
One mirror is 100% reflective but the other is 99% and when the waves of photons reflected backwards and forwards have enough energy, the travel through the 99% surface and are emitted in a quick burst.
Because the photons are in phase or coherent, it is very accurate and can be concentrated to cut metal or reflect off a special mirror put on the surface of the moon.

LASER = L.A.S.E.R.

Light
Amplification by the
Stimulated
Emission of
Radiation

Look at each word in the acronym. Read it backward. Then you will see that by emitting radiation, and stimulating it, you will amplify the output of light. So, think of very concentrated light waves. Heat energy is also a byproduct of light, so there are a myriad of applications, but I believe the best applications are in the medical field.

Mr. Gordon Gould after nearly 40 years of legal effort, was awarded the discovery of the LASER and the original acronym defined in his notes was a significant piece of evidence used in the trials. He was awarded patent rights and retroactive infringement awards from people stealing his idea.

On questions like this, Wikipedia is your friend.

Lasers are actually used for lots of things. In some cases, their main purpose is actually transmitting light in very controllable ways for the purpose of transmitting information (e.g, optical disk players use lasers to read the disks). In other cases, their main purpose is the concentration of energy/heat that occurs when you concentrate light. E.g., lasers are used as cutting tools.

The electron excitation and back to ground state cause a realese of energy in terms os photons. These photons in cohesion emission is called lasers.
