Here is what you should do.

Bring home the "tower".

Put in your Windows XP Home disc. It should either automaticaly, or give you the option to "Boot By Disc". You follow the steps, and install XP yourself.

It is EXTREMELY easy. Go to computerforum.com and ask for instructions.

I JUST reformatted my computer using Windows XP Home edition 2002.

The product registration key is entered, then you have to activate windows. You can either call, or register online. I went online and it said the product key had been used too many times. (I only used it twice). You call microsoft, talk to someone for 1 minute, and they give you an activation code. Process should not take more then 5 minutes. (takes about an hour to install windows, though). DO IT YOURSELF! IT IS WAY TO EASY!

I'm pretty sure that you are mistaken. All that you need to do is install the OS from the CD(s). After inserting the CD, reboot your computer. If it does not load automatically, select "boot from CD" from the list. If the list is nonexistent, then press F8 as the computer is booting. When it comes up, it is obvious in choice. Once the CD is loaded, just follow the instructions to install XP.

Also, I highly doubt that if you let them take a look at the CD, that they will make illegal copies. They overcharge enough, they do not need any more profit.

P.S.: Do not let them scam you into paying $400 dollars just to install the OS. It is simple; I am 13 and reinstalled it on my grandfather's Dell laptop. He payed me a hundred bucks. It was great.

I think you are mistaken about how activation works. I believe that Microsoft probably has a data base of legitimate product keys. If it sees more than one activation for that particular product key - one of the copies will be flagged with an illegal copy.

If you have bought your CD over the Internet - just activate - you do not have to register with Microsoft to get validated.

The hardware issues will start with Vista!!
