Hardly. The Civil war was close enough to home (can't get much closer than that) that people were well aware what was going on without the media telling them.
Lots has changed since then. People's attitudes are no longer the same. It's no longer considered normal to take 18 year old kids and send them straight to factory life or the army. We also have running water. Are we softer than we used to be? Sure. Is that necessarily a bad thing? Well, we certainly have more problems with obesity, but better education and dental care. Hard to say.

We did have media then just not as speedy as today. While the news traveled slower the outrage was there. The movie Gangs of New York while a stretch of the truth was roughly based on real events. One of the worst gang riots in New York City happened in the civil war era and was caused by the creation of the draft and those who opposed it.State and federal militias were called in to suppress it.It was actually worse than today so far no one state side has been killed in their opposition to Iraq.

Much, much more. The Civil War was already unpopular and controversial with the general populace. That tends to happen when family members are shooting at each other. With a better understanding of what was actually happening, there would probably have been riots.

Just because there wasn't TV, doesn't mean the media wasn't recording the terrors of that war. In some cases, the written word is stronger than any image on a television screen.

They had the media back then, it was just different. Although they didn't have television, radio, or movies, they had newspapers and other forms of early media.
