Usually you want to wait two months until you take the fry (AKA baby fish) out of the tank, and put them in with the normal fish. You want them to be at least half the size of the momma fish. By that point, the fry wont be eaten by the momma or the other fish because they are too big.

Are you talking about little baby fish or do you mean little fish that are the same size as all the others in the big/bigger tank?
If its babies, I would wait a bit so they can grow, because any fish no matter what size he is, will try to eat what he can get into his mouth. I found this out just a short time ago when I added some young bristlenoses to a tank with large Rainbow fish. Out of 10-11 babies, I have been able to detect only three. The others must have become supper for the big guys. I feel bad that I did not wait a couple more months.

When the fish is about the size as the smallest fish in the tank is a good rule.
When you do finally get around to doing it, turn off the lights in the bigger tank (with all the other fish), wait about 10-20mins, then add the new fish. Then about 10-20mins later, when the new fish has found a hiding place, turn the lights back on.
Good luck!

Its always a tough choice to introduce the little fish in with the other fish. as a general rule when they have grown as large as the smallest fish in the tank they should be okay. make sure there is lots of hiding places just in case though

If they are non-aggressive fish you could put the small ones in when they are a little bigger than the smallest fish already in the tank. If you're talking about aggressive fish, never safe to do that.

Well, if the little fish is smaller than the other fish, you shouldn't put the little fish in because it might get eaten by the other fish

When the big fish won't eat the little fish and vice versa. Although the latter is unlikely.
