Okay but 1st off I will assume you know certain things and their meanings.

Explain: This word should be self-evident
How: as above
This: as above
conflict: It's definition depends on the context of its usage
Illuminates: In this context it likely means demonstrates or shows.
Meaning of the work: Means what is the purpose of the work or what is it trying to convey.

Regular English:

1. Explain how this conflict sheds light on the meaning of the whole work, not on parts thereof.

2. Explain how this conflict explain and/or demonstrate the meaning of the whole work, not part/ or parts of it.

The word illuminate is a metaphor: conflict here is like a flash light, and under the light of this flash light, the meaning will be clearer and easier to understand in relation to the work as a whole.

The question is asking you to describe how the conflict in the story or novel relates to the theme of the whole book or story. Are you clear on what the conflict is in the story? Once you have that straight in your mind, think about the main idea of the book or story, and write down how the conflict relates to that "big idea." Good luck!

it would help if you gave some kind of context. like what the conflict is. but basically, the sentence is asking you to take this one specific situation (the conflict), and explain how it relates to the main idea of the book ( or whatever the work is).
