I've been trying to figure out if i have a chanc of attending a decent college.
I've immigrated to the U.S. from israel at the start of my frehsman year. I moved 3 highschools already and its really hard to keep up the grades. Now i'm a junior with a GPA of 3.00. I havnt taken the SAT yet because i know i would do horrible on it. The vocab are really hard for fluent english speakers, and for me it seems like its just impossible to master. Also i havnt taken a geomerty class yet, i am planning to my senior year and i know the SAT has alot of geomerty questions.

Bottom line is, i am so worried i don't know what to do. I see all the other students that take AP classes while i'm a junoir taking english 3-4 because my english is not well enough. I've talked to my caunselor and she tells me i'm fine but i don't believe her. Seems like she just wants to get rid of me and go on to the next student.

Anybody has any good advice of what should i do from here to have a get into college?

I know you are nervous about taking your SAT, but it's probably I good idea to take it soon, anyway. You can always take it over again, and taking it right away will give you an idea of what the exam is like and where you rank currently. Just the fact that you are concerned about your performance shows that you will do well and get into college. If you're truly concerned about your English, maybe you should talk to your counselor about getting help from a tutor. Just keep focusing on your education, and be confident in your abilities.

There is an alternative route to a college education if your grades and scores are not the greatest: you start by going to your local community college and then transferring after you earn two year's worth of credits (meaning, some people take longer to do those classes). This is a great way to save money by paying lower tuition at the community college while also finishing your degree at a regular college. It would really help if you could aim for a 3.5 GPA at the community college and then you'd be able to be accepted at most area colleges.

I agree with your counselor - your current GPA really isn't so bad. You still have a shot at getting into many local colleges, especially if you can indicate on your application somewhere that you are not a native English speaker. However, I agree that there isn't much point in taking the SAT right now if you haven't had geometry. But that also means that it would be harder to apply to selective colleges that need to have applications by around December.

I suggest you call your local community college to talk to an admissions counselor and also arrange to take a tour of the campus. I hope you will see that it is a perfectly acceptable way to start your college education.

there are SAT prep classes you can take to help with the vocab. I really suggest taking it once now...then maybe once after you finish geometry...you can take the test more than once and it usually gives you a better idea on what to expect and the score goes up as well. good luck! just keep trying!

Even if you can't spell, just keep on passing your classes. You can do anything you want to do with a great attitude like yours.
