Nationalism is a key element in any war. It is what binds a country's people together, for better or worse, against their common enemy.
Ursustrader correctly points out that it was a bunch of Leftist Socialist tyrants on a global rampage of conquest (except perhaps Hirohito). Nationalism was just one of their tools, along with racism, religious fanaticism, etc. Leftists are masters of pushing whatever buttons are necessary to get the Masses enraged.
