Aluminum is probably your ONLY other choice...but it's not actually that easy to weld. Compared to steel, it's not very cheap, either. Especially since you'll either need to use an expensive alloy to come close to equaling the strength of steel, or use tubing that is super thick (aka heavier & pricier).
If you had to ask a question like this one, that leads me to believe that you are not an aluminum welder by trade?
:-)
For something like a go cart, especially if you're making a fast one, you should make certain you know your alloys, fillers, and equipment. Not to mention if you get a heat treated alloy...you might need to worry about cracking, and possibly stress relief after you weld it.
Steel is much easier, and much cheaper. Chromoly tubing can be thinner, lighter, and very strong. For the sake of your safety, just be sure to do all of your home work on these metals. Or, be really cheap, and really easy, and just use mild steel tubing, which is actually tougher, and usually bends before it breaks.

dont listen to any of these people i m sorry, but there all idiots. If you have a $6000 welder, are a certified welder and have a couple grand to spend on metal. Titanium would be ideal. however in the real world you have two options, based on your experience: 1. steel would be the most practicle, its the easiest to weld, and by far the least expensive. It would be the heavier option, but for unless your looking into building something high performance it will suit your needs. its what i recomend you go with. 2. aluminum would be the other option, its more expensive but it is lighter with very little sacrifice in strength. If this is your first time welding make sure you have some extra to practice on, aluminum is extremely difficult to weld. other options metals like tungsten, mangnesium, brass, stainless steel, arent appropriate for this type of application, and would require specialized tools. Fiberglass could be used to make a body, but its no wear near strong enough to be the frame. Remember you can only use one metal, because you cannot weld two different metals together.
