positions were filled? I know tons of teams would have killed to have been able to hire Marty Schottenheimer.

AJ Smith is pretty much a spoiled little brat who is obviously sleeping w/ the owner. 14-2? Dude... weak

I can see we he got fired but it does seem very shady.

Marty and AJ could not get along and Dean Spanos (the owner) apparently trusts AJ more than Marty. If AJ told Dean that Terrell Owens should coach the Chargers, Dean would sign the check.

A previous poster was right: it's not that Marty was fired after the other positions were filled, it's BECAUSE the other positions were filled. Marty's offensive and defensive coordinators became head coaches and two other coaches became off. and def. coordinators of other teams. Marty probably tried to get them to stay, but AJ probably wouldn't have matched their pay. Hard to say.

What is shady is that it was done while some of Marty's supporters were in Hawaii for the Pro Bowl. Wonder how they got there if it weren't for the coach (and of course, their own talent)? AJ certainly didn't have much to do with it.

As for Marty's "refusal" of a one-year extension, I think that was Spanos-speak for "that way it looks like you really didn't want to be here when we fire you later." That or he figured one more year with AJ would have killed him.

FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS STORY:
Asked if (AJ) Smith should share the blame, (Marty) Schottenheimer said: "Uh, I'll leave that judgment to others."

Schottenheimer added: "There is and has been no relationship" with Smith.

Since when?

"How long's he been here?" Schottenheimer said.

Under normal circumstances, firing a coach who just went 14-2 would be idiotic. However, you have to look at the fact that the Chargers are probably the most talented team in the NFL, yet have nothing to show for it. Their playoff loss was mostly due to bad coaching decisions.

Never been a fan of Chokenheimer, he just can't get it up when it counts. He may be great at masturbating, but when it comes time to perform, he lets everyone down.

As for the Chargers waiting until all of the coaching positions were filled before throwing Marty out on his ***; well, intentionally or not, the Chargers did everyone a favor by sparing some team from the same fate: get everyone's hopes up, then CHOKE.

This isn't the first time that the Chargers have chosen their general manager over a popular and successful head coach. It wasn't too long after the Chargers made their first Superbowl appearance that they fired Bobby Ross because he didn't get along with Bobby Beathard.

Schottenheimer held the reins pretty tight with his assistant coaches when it came to talking to the media. Only one thing is clear: Marty and A.J. Smith hated each other and we'll know more about why things when down hey way they did now that the rest of the coaches are free to talk.

It doesn't seem to make much sense now nor did it make sense when they fired Bobby Ross. However, there is a lot more to this picture than meets the eye.

I agree with you. I don't think Marty Schottenheimer should be fired not because of his behavior, he is the coach and he deserve to tell the coordinator what to do. AJ Smith should have been fired because I think his behavior was more worse than Marty Schottenheimer and I am thinking it is fault that cost him his job. For a 14-2 team, he should have kept his job and fired AJ Smith instead. I have never seen a 14-2 coach gotten fired.

San Diego were wrong to fire Schottenheimer. He is one of the most successful coaches in the NFL with an all-time record of 200-126-1 (0.613).OK, his playoff record of 5-13-0 (0.278) is not that crash hot, but he can get a team to the playoffs.

In 5 years at the chargers he has a record of 47-33-0 (0.588). He has only had 1 year at the charger below 0.500 Win & (2003) when the team went 4-12 (0.250).

San Diego Management should be ashamed of themselves for letting this coach get away. I hope Schottenheimer gets picked up by a rival team to the Chargers and that team shuts the Chargers out and win Superbowl XLII.

On the flip side, who's going to take over San Diego? Most of the best assistants have taken the open jobs. Now San Diego has to promote someone or hire the scraps. Great job AJ!

Not sure if Marty would have been high on other team's lists. He's not young anymore and it appears teams wanted younger head coaches this offseason over coaching retreads.

Heck, we might see Marty back in Cleveland! If the Browns have another lousy season, fans might settle for just making the playoffs. And take their chances that Marty can break his curse in the playoffs.

Not at all shady, IMO. There is no rule as to when a coach has to be hired or fired. I also don't know that Schott has much left that is all that desirable to other teams at this point. He may show up in a front office somewhere, but I'd suspect he's going the way of Parcells and we won't see him trolling anymore sidelines as the leader.

Also, as for the AJ Smith thing...seems to me that he and Schott had issues when they allowed Brees to head even further south. If Smith had further plans that they would argue about, now was probably a good time to freshen the coaching position.

I decided to throw the biggest party in San Diego history when I got the news that Crappenheimer was fired. Not only is the guy a complete idiot, he's a disgrace to the NFL. I just hope L.T. gets traded soon so the guy has a chance to get the superbowl ring he deserves. Did anyone see L.T. after their loss to New England? You could tell the guy was crushed. Oh and Kaeding is the biggest joke in the NFL. Sorry if I sound mean, but Ive been waiting years to see SD go to the big game, and on their best chance to do so, Schottenheimer blows it. Good day.

actually i think it was cuz Schottenheimer was fired because he and AJ smith were complaining about losing so much on the staff this year (no O coordinator or a new weak D coordinator)...

it wasnt that they waited to fire schottenheimer after the coaching positions were filled, it was because the coaching positions were filled and that was the reason schottenheimer was fired. AJ smith is a spoiled and whiny brat however to fire a 14-2 coach over personel issues...what a jerk

Three days after the 24-21 playoff loss to New England, Schottenheimer declined the team's offer of a $4.5 million, one-year extension through 2008, which came with a club-option $1 million buyout. Spanos and Smith seemed visibly angry that the coach turned them down.
