Three different effects that I can think of:
1) Dissolution: some solids (e.g., sugar) dissolve in water.
2) Mechanical displacement: water can push the solid. This also happens with ice when fracturing a rock, or with glacial friction.
3) Compression: The sheer weight of water can cause solids to compact. Again, think of glaciers.

It would totally depend on what the solids are. I'd guess make them wet =]
