'm 13 and interested in starting a sport. I know it's kind of late because most kids start when they're like six, but I'd really like to try. I'm trying to find a talent. However, I have no athletic ability and my running speed is horrible. What are some good sports to begin playing and how should I go about doing this? What are ways to increase my athletic ability?

some of the best athletes don't 'discover' their sport until later in life, so you should go for it, you may have to work a bit harder at first, but find something you enjoy. if you really love your sport, you will practice harder and more and you will naturally gain skills. i'm willing to bet you have some athletic ablilty, it just needs some time and conditioning to come out. even if you are never the star athlete on the team, you will have a great time doing it. plus, a lot of times, the teamates that you have will be lifelong friends.

if you really have no clue what you like, try some things out while just playing around- shoot some hoops, swim some laps, kick a ball... see what makes you happy.

when i was 13, i thought i was too old to start doing gymnastics because it did seem like everyone started when they were old enough to walk, but this couldn't be farther from the truth. i never did do gymnastics, which i regret, because i thought this way, but i did start running cross country when i was in college (never ran on a team before-EVER) and loved it!

good luck!!

Depends. Do you consider golf a sport? Very few "youngsters" play, so once you get to a decent level, you are already ahead of almost everybody.

Tennis is a VERY fun amateur sport. It requires a lot of direction changes and very very short sprints, but endurance and speed matter less than they would in other sports.

Soccer is all the craze these days. Everyone is playing, so even if you are terrible, you are probably better than 2-3 people on your team anyway. The thing is that you need to be a decent endurance runner. I got into shape just by plopping an elliptical/treadmill right in front of my TV, and after a month of running, I was one of the top runners in my group. It ain't rocket science.

Badminton and water polo are also amazing. (My two favorite sports, actually.) Chances are, though, it'll be a lot harder to find a league to play in. If you see one, though, give it a shot.

Try wrestling. The season is almost over for high school, but see if they have a freestyle or greco roman team or club. You will not get cut from the team or anything like that; the sport is about interpersonal success and improvement. You will not have to worry about "letting a team down" or sitting on a bench. As long as you are willing to work and learn, then wrestling may be a great sport.

Whatever sport you do you will have to practice very hard and very much especially if you are trying out for school teams. most sports require speed, reflex, and coordination. if you have that then you have got a shot. softball or golf may be a good start for u. However, if you know that you don't have any athletic ability then why not try to find something that you already know you can partially do(crochet, play chess, write, draw, etc) and try to improve that talent.

For high school sports, wrestling is great. While for many sports, it takes your entire lifetime to be any good, you can just jump into wrestling and be able to excel. There are no cuts and everyone gets a chance to wrestle. All you need to do well is to work hard. There are many instances of guys that go into wrestling for the first time in high school and become state champs. Although that is often natural talent, most of wrestling is just being willing to bust your butt to get better.

If you cant run fast, that knocks out almost all land sports. Ever think of a goalie or a hockey player. try swimming. or one of the 2 lamest sports. Chess which i don't see how its a sport but it is. or stacking cups which there is a world series for and is so stupid how is that a sport what so ever.

very tough question to answer since you said you have no athletic ability. You said you're trying to find a talent. I'll say table tennis if you're very coordinated. You don't need too much foot speed for that. Or maybe try ice skating.

Another great one is bowling. Get some lessons, work on good bowling form and impress your friends with high bowling scores.

Try one you like. If you don't like it you will not stick with it. If you don't like to run avoid cross country. Track and field has a few activities that don't involve a lot of running. There's also tennis, baseball, ice skating and volleyball. I didn't notice if you are male or female. So will stop there.
It is also good exercise to help with yard work. Mowing, raking etc. All these activities helps to build strength.

doing track and field with a close friend can help get in shape and it'll get you to be faster. Plus, you dont have to run. So that's always good. You don't have to tryout either. All you have to really do is just put some effort into it.
