Stretch to movies. The biggest and best advice I can give. Stretch in the middle split for as long as you can (DON'T STRAIN! hold at a comfortable position. Even though the splits aren't comfortable, I know), no more than 6 minutes. Time your stretches by the clock on the DVD/Video player. This is a good cycle:
1. Middle split.
2. Side stretches.
3. Hips.
4. Hamstring flexibility. Forward bend is VERY important. As are other splits.
5. Tone out with leg lifts, crunches, push-ups.

Some tips...
1. Breathe evenly and ALWAYS.
2. Make sure its warm in the room.
3. It takes one minute seconds for the stretch to apply to your permanent muscle memory, so don't rush or BOUNCE.
4. A good movie. lol.
Best of luck!
It might take a year or so for you to get to be really flexible, but don't give up, and keep doing those movie stretches. And hour and a half eventually. Don't hold any pose for longer than ten minutes. Stretch or work out through the whole movie if possible. But sometimes you don't feel like it, and that's normal. Do it anyway.
:-) It takes a long time to get results, but hang in there. Its all sooo worth it.

Simple!

1. Do stretching exercises. It prepares your muscles for the needed dance routines. Also, it will prevent injuries. If your muscles are injured because of sudden movements, your movements will be constricted by pains. It is very important that the muscles are relaxed and flexible enough to move.

2. Relax when you dance. If you don't your muscles will be stiffed and constricted. You may have fun dancing but your stiffness will be visible to other people. You will look awkward if you don't relax when you dance.

3. Practice your routines. If you don't you will have a hard time dancing. Your mind concentrates on the routine and not on the music. You might end up dancing at the wrong beat. Grace requires flexibility in dancing.

At first I believed that flexibility didn't matter as a dancer, but the mroe you watch dance, the mroe flexible ones are prettier to watch. But- don't worry! flexibility can be obtained through persistence, stretch every day if possible, challenge yourself during warm up even, you will see immediate results.

I dance, and I know a lot of people who do. You don't need to be flexible, just as long as you are willing to try and can put your foot up to your knee, you should be fine, at least in Jazz.
