Generally accepted to mean midnight but it is confusing and that is the reason you asked it. M stands for meridian or noon. AM is antemeridian or morning and PM is post meridian or afternoon. 12 high noon should be stated as 12M and 12 midnite as 12MN. There ought to be a way of standardizing all these. Can Yahoo! do it? Same with a punctuation in relation to close quotation marks. Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, latest edition has a section on this.

In the USA, 12 a m means midnight. This is a confusing usage, as various answers earlier would show.
Where time is expressed with a 24-hour notation, it is usual to say 0000 for midnight, 0100 for 1 a m, 1200 for noon,1300 for 1
p m, and so on. However, some people are used to the 12-hour notation and that is why they say 12 am for midnight and 12 pm for noon.
I personally would opt for the 24-hour notation as it can be universally used and avoid confusion, even though it may take a fraction of a second more to interpret it.

There is neither a 12:00AM nor a 12:00PM.
12:01AM is 00:01 on the 24 hour (military) time, and 12:01 PM is 1 minute after Noon.
There is no such time as 24:00 hours, 23:59 is the highest time 'number' Midnight is 00:00.

A.M. and P.M. start immediately after Midnight and Noon (Midday) respectively.
Every day starts precisely at midnight and A.M. starts immediately after that point in time e.g. 00:00:01 A.M. (see also leap seconds)
To avoid confusion timetables, when scheduling around midnight, prefer to use either 23:59 or 00:01 to avoid confusion as to which day is being referred to.
It is after Noon that P.M. starts e.g. 00:00:01 PM (12:00:01)

12 Am Midday

"am" means before noon.
"pm" means after noon.

12 am, 12 before noon, is midnight before the noon in question; 12pm, 12 after noon, is midnight after the noon in question. If you mean noon, say 12 noon, 12 midday, noon or midday or, better still, use a 24 hour clock and call it 12.00.

The problem is digital clocks working on a 12 hour system and they only have am and pm as options. With those, 12pm is noon but it is illogical.
