Often when I open/close the garage door, it stops abrubptly in the middle and goes the other way. So I have to keep pressing the remote or wall switch to fully close/open it. It doesn't happen all the time, and nothing seems to be blocking the little red light at the front.

Any ideas/suggestions - other than purchasing a new garage door system?

make sure the sensors on the bottom of the track are lined up with each other, and free of obstructions.

Make sure that all the bolt heads in the track are not interfering with the rollers on the door. Anything that will restrict the door from closing smooth, will cause the door to reverse directions.

Also make sure that the sensitivity setting on the motor is set at the right level. This sensor will sometimes be see to high, and any friction the door encounters will be viewed as an obstructions and the door will reverse.

Also, make sure all hardware and chains are properly lubricated.

1. As others have posted, make sure the sensors are aligned and CLEANED. Even if they are aligned, if you have a cobweb in the path, it could fool the sensor.

2. Some garage doors have a sensor in the bottom foam strip to detect an obsticle in it's path. You will know this is the case if there is a coiled wire attached to the bottom of the door. You can temporarily defeat this sensor and test the ability to open and close. Remember to re-hook up the system to prevent injury to a child.

3. There should be a up and down pressure adjustment switch on the housing of the motor of the garage door opener. Make sure you try them on maximum pressure and work back to a point of failue to continue in the same path. Mark it on the box with a magic marker and move the sensor to a point just before failure.

4. Make sure no binding of the door rollers. Lubricate if necessary. Replace any that cannot be loosened by lubrication or shows excessive wear.

5. I am assuming this is an overhead sectional door. When the door is down, look from the inside at the coil springs at the top of the door on the shaft. There is one for the left side and one for the right and they meet in the middle. This type of problem often happens when one of the assist springs have broken. One spring will look tight or you will actually see the break in the coil. The other will loosen the coils and increase in diameter. The fix is to replace the broken spring. They are not cheap but less than a garage door opener. This is not something you can easily repace yourself. Call a professional to set the tension. If it is the spring, even replacing the garage door opener will NOT improve the function so this is important to look at.

The bulb might be bad but since it probably was not lit when the power outage/surge the defect might be on the circuit board. If just the solder trace is gone it might be repairable but newer openers time the light electronically. Perhaps the light was out before the storm. Bulb sockets on Chamberlain openers fail all the time. Try unplugging the opener and clean the metal contacts inside the socket. Without knowing the make, model, and age I cannot go much further. Email me if you want.

well press in the middle and wait for it to go completely up and then click in the middle again and don't touch it it should go down
if that doesn't work make sure nothing is in the way cuz there are sensors

mine has the same problem some times....you need to adjust the optical sensors (there should be one at the lower part of the door mounted on each side) they are out of alignment or dirty.

U could get a repairing person to fix it or you could just pull it down or up with the little red rope....
