First of all -- looking at a drink menu is totally not nerdy. If anything, you'd look more experienced by wanting to check out the selection rather than ordering the run-of-the mill beers. That would also eliminate the price asking issue. If there isn't a drink menu, bars normally have the bottles of beer they offer displayed somewhere around the bar or just ask what bottled beer they have. When I order a bottle of beer, I just ask for a Bud or Bud Light Bottle. No big deal.
