the phone rang and rang but no one answered because they had all went out for pizza.
I wonder if the tense "went" is right or is it "gone"...rang and rang is past tense and if I stay in past tense then it will be "went" yet if I change it to "gone'' then I change it to past participle...can I do that in a sentence - have past tense and past participle??

I would definitely go with "gone". It sounds much better and proper than "went" in this case.

I'd use 'gone' out for pizza. The reason is...you said 'They HAD all went out...'. HAD takes care of the tense in that case, so it would read;

"The phone rang and rang, but no one answered because they had all gone out for pizza."

Rang and rang and went are all past tense. I think 'went' is the right choice.

I would phrase it this way:

The phone rang and rang but no one answered because everyone had gone out for pizza.

How about this: "The phone ringed and ranged but no one answered because they had all went and gone out for pizza."

If you want to cover all your bases, use gonded instead of gone: "gonded out for pizza".

They all went and gonded out for pizza. Perfect.

Lisa E has it right, but that's so boring. She must be a librarian.

Let's all become illiterate morons. That way we can sit there without a care in the world and drool down the front of our shirts.

I would "gone",
But if you really want to use "went" all you have to go is take out the "had"

I quite forgot verbs and participles but I know it is 'gone'.

First instint is most correct. An english major could justify and mandate corectness with GONE, but, it's a futile argument.

I believe it should be "gone" instead of "went". Do yourself a favor, and stop over analyzing it. You'll drive yourself crazy.
