I don't know what the 1st girl is talking about. A lot of drugs and gangs? What?! Ok, I'm not saying SJ us without those elements, but we were voting one of the safest big cities in the nation. Every large city has gangs and drugs, and SJ is no exception, but those areas are secluded and those problems are a lot less than other cities our size. If she's referring to the East Side SJ, every low-income neighborhood has its problems, but I often go to the East Side for cultural events and awesome food! It's not dangerous at all, unless you yourself are in a gang.
As far as school, like the guy before said, the Fremont Union District has the best schools. It's expensive to live in those neighborhoods (West SJ) but there are cheaper apartments located along De Anza Blvd. If you live in South SJ, there are also really good schools, such as Leland High.
As far as stuff to do, there's a ton! San Francisco is only 45 minutes away and Santa Cruz is only 30 miutes away. Other fun towns that are close are Berkeley and Palo Alto. You'll have a great time. Good luck.

Try Willow Glen area, and stay away from east San Jose, that is a lower income, higher crime area......... the Almaden area is nice too.
There's a cute little kids zoo (Happy Hollow) and a lot of culture, plus the Sharks Hockey team, and a lot of theatre downtown.
I'm sure if you find a good realtor, they will steer you in the right direction.......if you're buying. If renting, then keep an eye open. There are safe areas and "scary" areas, just like anywhere else. But I'd try to stick with Almaden or Willow Glen if you can, or the very south part of San Jose, right before Morgan Hill.

I don't know when the first poster lived in San Jose, but I have got to say her post in not accurate. I was raised in the San Jose area. I have also lived in Monterey and the Sacramento areas, but I am currently back in San Jose. Gangs are certainly not prevalant. I am not saying there are not gangs. I am just saying you would need to seek them out. While there are drug dealers just like in most cities I have never in my life heard someone call San Jose "Spun Jose". While every big city has crime I would certainly say that San Jose's crime is not high when compared to other large cities.
Are you actually moving to San Jose or a city close by such as Los Gatos, Campbell, Cupertino, etc? There are a few good high schools but it really depends on where you will be living. Prospect High School in West San Jose is good. Fremont High School in Sunnyvale is good too.
I would avoid living in downtown San Jose and East San Jose as they are very crowded areas, lower income areas and the crime rate does tend to be higher in those areas.
I would agree with the poster that people here are not the friendliest. If you want to know all your neighbors and walk down the street and have most people say hi to you then San Jose is not the place for you. People are not mean though either. I would say they are indifferent.
If you would like more info I would be happy to tell you.

truly San Jose. I actually have lived close to there for 20 years. i in my view don't like San Jose. Too many shady searching people, yet i can guaranttee that the crime is way worse in Austin. in case you carry out a touch learn, you'll come across a housing music or community it is way from the shady neighborhoods. stay as some distance west and south as plausible. The eastside is the worst. North is downtown. yet i love what Phil G suggested. we've lots to furnish. you'd be the following for 3 months and nonetheless no longer see each and each and every of the places we've:Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Napa Valley, Mt. Hamilton, Gilroy Garlic pageant.........

My experiences in San Jose were mostly bad. Northern Cali is soo beautiful but in SJ there are a lot of drugs and gangs. We call it "spun jose" because of the meth problem. The best schools and the most beautiful neighborhoods are in Santa Clara. The rose garden area is really nice but it is an extremely expensive area to live in. I hope you guys can afford it because its a great neighborhood with relatively low crime, little gang activity and Santa Clara University is an excellent college. There are nice churches and community places, beautiful parks and mostly good people. Please look out for the dopeheads though, they are ruthless and dangerous to be around and they will take you down with them in a heartbeat, as well as steal everything they can get their hands on while making a chaos of your life. Its soooo crazy!!!!!!! I was completely unprepared for the silicon valley when I moved there from TX and had some really shocking experiences though I thought I was both aware and educated on many street subjects. It is totally different out there and if you're used to people who say "hey." when they pass you in the street, be prepared to notice that hardly anyone looks you in the eye, much less says "hey." I hope your life there is a good one and that you meet the great people. BTW, if ya'll are catholic, St. John Vianney on the east side is a wonderful church community full of great people, fun activities, one of the best schools, and many charitable organizations. GOOD LUCK! and best wishes, my prayers are with you.
