Oh I have seen similar questions being asked in other areas here at Yahoo answer. Well I got some more time to spare. Let me share you my thoughts about this phenomena

Dancing is both an Art and a Sport. However, believing which is which requires a conviction. But whether you believe it should be an art does not affect that fact that it is a sport too. But when are we going to toe the line and say it's a sport and when its an art?

Both as an art and as a sport, dancing can be described as an activity that requires physical exertions. As an art, dancing is an activity that can elicit wonder to those who watch it, or even to the one who performs it. Making certain criteria on how a particular dance should be danced and subject several dancers to a competion transform an art to a sport.

Now, if you ask me if I believe that dancing is a sport, I would say that it is not a matter of belief but a matter of fact. It is a sport. But if you ask me what I would prefer to see what dancing should be? Sport or Art? I would say.... art.

Dancing in my experience is my own self expression. I am unique and I hate to see myself competing with other people. Each dancer is unique in his own way, and so am I. I do not see the purpose to transform it into a sport. Besides, whenever I compete, I lose the passion to dance.

Dancing is primarily an Art like singing, painting and acting (not TV acting, I mean real acting like in theater); even if some dance forms require a lot of strength, coordination, flexibility and endurance, the primary purpose is still artistic expression.

Now "DanceSport" has been officially recognized as sport since 1997 by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). DanceSport includes ten international style ballroom dances (five Standard and five Latin). So this prove that some kind of dancing can become a sport if you get them organized and create a set of rules for that style; but not all dancing can be or qualify to be called sport.

For example Ballet required athletic ability but they called themselves artists because they want to express something in an artistic form, not to compete.

The difference between sport and art is the purpose: the purpose of art is to express something; the purpose of sport is to compete against others or against oneself.

Any physical activity can become a sport but a set of rules and competitions are required to achieve the status of sport activity.

No. To be a sport requires three things:
1. A ball
2. Running
3. Two competing teams and multiple people on the field at the same time

Dancing has none, therefore it's not a sport. Baseball has all three, so it's a sport. Golf has only 1, so it's an activity, not a sport.

Sports:
Baseball
Basketball
Dodgeball
Hockey (a puck is a modified ball)
Football
Soccer
Volleyball

Activities, not sports:
Cycling
Golf
Tennis (one-on-one = no sport)
Car racing
Lawn darts

Lame:
Dancing

I dont consider dancing a sport. Mainly because sports involve physical interaction with opposing sided. In dancing, you interact with a teammate only or perform a solo act infront of judges. For instance, Ice Skateing i do not consider a sport either.

However, if you would consider the definition of SPORT as any activity that distributes energy then dancing, skateboarding, rollerskateing, football etc. would all fall under the category as a sport. If it is not for monetary gain and is jsut for fun, it would be considered exercise.

You dont need a ball or have to run for it to be considered a sport. Snowboarding and winter games are forms of this....I think i just changed my inital opinion while writing this lol. Thanks for making me think! :)

Dancing is a physical activity that is classified as a performing art. A sport involves some sort of competition within the activity itself. Basketball is a sport because of a competing team. Hunting is a sport because of the competition with what is being hunted. Yes there are dance competitions to get chosen to perform, but within the 'dance' itself the dancers do not compete, they engage work with each other to express the art of the dance.
No it is not a sport.

Dancing could be many things: paintings, sport, custom, social interest, sport. that's as much as a man or woman what he/she decides to emphasise. Technically i'm striving to be a Dancesport Athlete (it fairly is the call for aggressive ballroom dancers of Championship point) yet I choose to think of of dancing as an paintings style. I nonetheless agree that it demands fairly some wellbeing, that the muscle tissues of a ballerina are comparable in potential to the muscle tissues of Olympic athletes, yet nonetheless - dancing is an paintings to me, very stressful paintings. there's a difference between an artist and a painter, yet technically speaking they the two paint.

Lindy - hop.

Breakdancing.

The Charleston.

All energy-driven dances. All require skill and timing. It should be an olympic sport - the ability to move the body is pure poetry motion.
