no i don't really think it has to much to do with that, it's just at a time when something bad happened we are so fragile and any little thing could set of a crying spell. it's like putting a lemon on an open wound. but sometimes when a song is sad it triggers memories and that could be it too.

Obviously it's the words, and the way we relate them to our own lives. Crying is an emotional release, necessary in a society where personal expression is frowned upon. Without this release, you can be sure the world would be a dangerous place.

Sometimes it's simply the melody that touches us.
When my nephew was a toddler, we had this musical ornament that if you squeeze it, it would play twinkle twinkle....and he would start to look sad and cry! (It was so funny, and cute!) but when it stopped, he instantly stopped crying. It was wierd.
Sometimes when I listen to a very powerful classical piece, even if it's not loud, my arm hairs will stand on end. Our emotions are more than just visual.

there are scientists that are puzzled by things like this. they are still trying to figure out how the human organs cause deppression and how it is connected to the human organs. they are trying to figure out why human emotions are controlled by the organs. they still dont know why things can make people feel sad, hopeless, depressed and cry. they are trying to figure out scientifically just how this all works. so for anybody on yahoo answers to answer your question correctly with scientific proof would be impossible at this time. but we can all try to answer non scientifically but then the answer wouldn't be completely correct......it would be incomplete. but i will attempt.
well i am absolutely posotive that it is not the words (lyrics) of the song that make us sad. and most of the time we are not putting ourselves in the situation of the song. ever tried just reading the lyrics off a peice of paper without singing them in the correct notes. go ahead.....try it. get the lyrics and read them like you would normally read anything else.........did it make you sad? most likely not. now read them again and imagine you are in the situation......did it make you sad that time? it is possible but it is still very unlikely. now play the song in a cd player. when the music starts you will start to feel sad depending on what the song is about. now obviously you want feel sad if it sounds like rock and roll or hip hop or uplifting music. now the music, as a whole sparks our emotions. the notes, the tone, the voice of the singer......they all combine and are interpreted by our brain.......somehow the brain and the organs together cause this sad feeling, the song could be described as depressing......but that takes us to where we were before.....how is depression caused. how do the organs cause depression. these questions remained unanswered. we know it is the bodily organs causing depression because there is medication that can be taken to rid this depression. this medication alleviates, or lessens the depression.......but for some this medication does not work and the depression remains. this is why we are still trying to figure out exactly how the organs cause depression so they can create a medication that will completely get rid of it. anyways as i said before this question can never really be answered correctly because the root to the answer of this question is in the human emotions.....and those are unknown.
but wait. you dont even need words or music or sound to become saddened. you dont need anything to become sad. all you need is you brain to imagine it. your brain will interpret anything and it can cause you to be sad. in movies they use background music playing to create the feeling they want the viewer to feel. right now as i am typing these words there is a case on the news of a boy who died and they are playing sad background music. then again you dont even need music to make someone feel sad.
but normally sad movies use just sad classical songs with no words to give the viewer a feeling of sadness. and it is only playing lightly in the background. so the question still remains......why do humans cry when listening to sad music? it stirs our emotions. people can cry when listening to classical music without any words. we still have alot to learn about human emotions. but nobody on here will be able to answer this question. to just say it is human emotions would be correct but the answer goes much deeper then that. we have yet to discover exactly how human emotions work. we do not know scientifically.
but in a song it could be anything that makes a person sad. it could be the music, the notes, the singers voice, the lyrics. or the song could just make the person think of a sad time in there life. when playing piano there is major scales and minor scales. there is many diffrent types of scales that sound diffrently and have diffrent notes. for example. some sound like jazz, some sound like horror movie music, some sound sad, some sound hopeful (like you are sad but you are starting to feel happy). but there are lots of diffrent scales for every type of music.

I think, when it comes to music and movies, having empathy makes you cry. When you hear those words, and you can imagine yourself in that situation, it brings up emotions which make you cry. But the physical part of it baffles me. I do not understand that when we cry, or become emotional, our eyes tear.

Tears produced while weeping or crying are due to emotional stress. These tears are commonly associated with negative emotions like physical pain, depression, grief or being hurt. More details and information at http://eye-care.in/tears.html
