Write out cards with the main points on them.

Go through each card and say aloud what's on the card.

Once you've done that a few times - get someone to test you

When you read something about history, visualize it in your mind, like a mini movie taking place. For example; the Civil War, visualize the struggles between the north and the south, both sides went through hell in the battle fields. Visualize the slaves the war was liberating, what they went through, the hell on earth for them that would be put to an end with the wars end. Bring what you read to life, because it was very real at one time. Reading and understand it, not just memorizing it, will keep what those brave people did alive.
