You don't have to be caffeine-free. You should moderate how much you drink. I think it's like 2 cups a day at the most. Talk to your doctor and see why exactly he wants you to completely cut out caffeine.

Every woman faces a few of these little things that are important to keeping you happy and is in that grey area of should you/shouldn't you - caffeine is one of those items. Coffee is not like cocaine use, smoking, or other clear no-nos.

Some doctors say never, others say some, still others couldn't care. Just so you know, the list of what you can and can't have does change between pregnancy and breastfeeding. I recommend you get information from a pediatrician or lactation consultant about your new list of yesses and nos.

- Go interview pediatricians, since you need to find one you like anyway. While there, ask him/her about caffeine and other stuff. (most give interview visits for free)
- Many mothers report that their baby is a little jazzed about 2 hours after they have caffeine (about the time it hits the milk). For some mom/baby units this is ok, but for others it isn't. Try and learn.
- Do what works for you - if skipping the coffee is going to make you hate life, resent the baby, and jump off a ledge, any doc will tell you that it's better to have a small cup.

That would depend on how much coffee you drink. The caffeine will have effects on your baby, just like they would have effects on anyone. A lactation consultant at my hospital told us in a breastfeeding class that 2-3 cups of coffee a day would not do any harm. When I was pregnant, my doctor told me I didn't have to give up caffeine, but limit my intake. I wouldn't be too worried unless you drink a pot of coffee a day. If you do have more concerns, contact a lactation consultant---most hospitals have one on staff.

Two cups of coffee is safe. That is in any pregnancy book you will read and you just got a ***** of a nurse..if you talk to another one they might have a better opinion..or better yet talk to your doctor as they know better.

ALso be warned nurses are very annoying because they will all say something contradictory on the same issue be it feedings, dieting, sleeping etc. Ive found most nurses to be extremely annoying throughout pregnancy and after birth so I just ask the doctor or do it my own way.

You don't have to be completely caffeine free but you may want to limit it during the first couple of months because it can affect the baby's sleep. You cna try to limit it to 1 cup per day and see how the baby does. Some react more to it than others. As they get older it usually affects them less and less.

I think you can have 2 cups a day. Ask your doc he should be able to help you. Try some of the decaf flavored coffees like from Starbucks. That what I drank and they were actually a nice treat.

You can enjoy coffee and chocolate, but in moderation. Usually about one cup of coffee per day is okay. I remember one breastfeeding instructor said that if women weren't allowed to have coffee or chocolate anymore because of breastfeeding, then nobody would ever have any babies!!!

I think you should be able to breastfeed and then drink coffee! You could breastfeed the baby and then pump some milk as well, then enjoy your coffee, and wait several hours before you feed her again, hence the pumping, you could give her a bottle if she needed it in the meantime!!!!!!!!!
hope this helped

i think that if you haved a little bit of coffee right after a feeding it should be out of your system enough for the next feeding, but check with the lactation specialist at the hospital first, or ask someone from the leleche league

Many coffee brands now offer a variety with "half the caffeine." Just look around and I'm sure you'll find one you like. That is what I drink and it tastes pretty good to me.
