If it is a Kenmore, Whirlpool, Kitchen Aid, Roper or Estate the motor coupling is bad. Call for service. It is worth the repair.
Questions about appliances can be best answered when the make and a model number are supplied. Any other answer is just speculation and most likely not acurate.

Take the top off the agitator...if it is removable. If not, remove the agitator. The gear may be broken that moves the agitator back and forth or the shaft may be worn. Someone with a little mechanical ability could fix it. Worse come to worse, you can probably get one for FREE at a web site that folks give things away. It's called freecycle.org and costs nothing to join. My son got his wife an almost brand new sewing machine, his friend a great condition dishwasher..i could go on and on. If it is uneconomical to repair the machine, try that route. Sounds like it's something simple, though.

Sounds like the belt broke and the belt flopping around or the bearings in the motor went....... First pull the machine out, unscrew the panel in the back look and see if the belt has broken..
Then call a repairman or if you are a DIY person easy fix....
