I am writing a research paper on the affects of cigarette sales on our economy, and the potential disaster of banning smoking in the U.S.

Concidering that our economy depends very heavily on the monetary support of cigarette sales, as well as the monetary support of the manufacturers, both from a job-producing and contribution standpoint, would you feel that a national ban is a good idea or bad idea?

Please answer only once, as I may relist question several times to conduct a thorough survey. Thank You very much for your answers, and your 2 cents.

(I will also welcome any personal opinions on the subject, as you may state a point I have not yet concidered, on any aspect of the topic. It could prove to be vital in my research, and including in my paper. Again, THANK YOU!)

Well, it helps the government to have them legal because we tax those products, so it generates valuable tax money. However, if these people were to take the money they would have spent on cigarettes and instead invested it, that would be significantly more beneficial to the economy, plus would limit the consumer debt that currently runs rampant in the US.

In reality, a black market would inevitably develop, since they are addictive, and then it would be like marijuana (except more addictive), where the money being spent on it goes into crime, isn't calculated in the GDP, and isn't taxable.

I think taxing is best, because it will limit the number or people smoking. An all out ban would be catastrophic, especially if there were no federal addiction coping programs in place.

Absolutely not! The government should not ban any product. Besides, it's kind of a catch 22 for them since sales generate enormous $$ in taxes. However, it doesn't seem to bother anyone that cigarette companies claim to have help for people who want to quit. That's nuts and I don't believe it's true. It's a publicity stunt to try to get the anti smoking people off their backs.

We've got to get over the idea that the government is protecting us or should have any part of protecting us. Adults need to take care of themselves and take the consequences when they don't.
