Bring your system up in Safe Mode, Right click on My Computer, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager, Look for items with an exclamation point. Disable any that you find.
If your antivirus will run in Safe Mode run a virus scan. There are viruses that will cause your system to restart and freeze.

Good Luck

The problem is likely caused by a buggy driver. Disconnect stuff one at a time and see if it fixes the problem. You also have to uninstall the driver. If this does not work, re-install the stuff you took off. It might then be a problem with your hardware. You'll have to systematically check things one at a time.
BAD NEWS; if removing stuff one at a time isolates the problem, it still does not tell you if it is a driver or hardware problem.
Good luck! You might have to take it into a shop where different hardware can be switched out during the process of elimination.

Open the power supply up and check inside, if there are bulges or leakage on any of the capacitors the supply should be replaced. Just be sure to get the supply from H.P. If the supply is ok, it is possible that the mobo has a bad southbridge chip.

+1 to mittalman53, the symptoms described sound like there could be problems with the capacitors. Check the mainboard capacitors as well, I have tossed out a couple of similar HP systems, they were recapped but the damage exceeded just the capacitors being bad.
