English, Scottish and Welsh sausages are sometimes called bangers because of their tendency to explode during cooking if poorly made.

They have been called "Bangers" alot longer than that by a couple of hundred years. When you fry them the casings (skins) tend to "Explode" in the pan thus "Bangers"
