He was great, and definitely among the overrated players of the 80's. But personally think Dale Murphy is the most underrated. A lot of those guys are getting no respect because it wasn't the most offensive decade (except for 1987). Others that have been overlooked... Dwight Evans, Darrell Evans, Kent Hrbek, George Bell, Tom Brunansky, Pedro Guerrero...even Dawson, Mattingly, Baines, who get some attention, still are underrated as well.

Yeah, the Dodgers were a basically weak team that would never have won without Kirk Gibson and Orel Hershiser.

But the '84 Tigers pounded the rest of baseball senseless, including the Padres in the series. They would still probably have won without Gibson.

Gibson was a very good player and a real leader on that Dodger team, but he also got hurt a lot and had the worst throwing arm I've ever seen. Plus it's not like he doesn't get ink. In fact I saw his homerun on ESPN about 3 hours ago.

If you want an underrated player, look at Gibsons teammate on the Tigers... Darryl Evans, or his teammate on the Dodgers, Pedro Guerrero. They were both better players than Gibson, but who ever hears anything about Guerrero or Evans anymore?

He was a great player as well as a club house leader. I think Andre Dawson was probally the most underated player of that decade. Both were very good and this is just my opinion!

All I can say is he is one player I will always remember, after watching that hobble HR, how could I ever forget.

I agree. If he had stayed healthy and played longer he might even have been a hall of famer.
