Or do you live there? I have always wanted to go see the stone figures. Has anyone seen them and how big are they in person. Can you visit them? Also those cliffs around the islands...how much of a drop off are they? From satalite view they look very very steep. Just curious.

~~ I dislike seeing interesting questions unanswered.
No I heven't beent o Easter Island (Rapa Nui) either.
Like you I think it looks fascinating and not a wee bit mysterious.

~~ This from their website:
Easter Island today, remains one of the most unique places you will ever encounter; an open air museum showcasing a fascinating, but unfortunately lost, culture.
The Rapanui are among the friendliest people you will ever meet, and the landscape is truly amazing - with its volcanic craters, lava formations, beaches, brilliant blue water, and archaeological sites.
That sounds so cool:

The links at the bottom of this page are great too, especially the photographs.

~~ I didn't realise till just now that the statues are only restanding because of recent archaeological efforts.
They had all actually been torn down by the islanders!
You can visit the statues, tourism is the main industry of the island, run by the inhabitants themselves.

~~ This from WikiTravel:
Easter Island is extremely small, so it is possible to get around fairly easily.
There are rental cars, (generally jeeps), available from a few rental agencies in Hanga Roa, as well as a few dirtbikes.
With a car, it's possible to see most of the sites on the island in a few hours.
Bycycles can be hired on a daily basis.
For more rugged visitors, horses can also be rented.

There is mention of the breathtaking cliffs in this article and caution people about them, so they must indeed be pretty steep.
