Honestly, and I mean this...practice. I found that the main thing that usually keeps me from doing or saying something is that I am literally just in shock and don't know what to do. Think about the most common scenarios you're likely to face, and think about what you would want to say or do. Then, ignore the other people around you (social pressure to "not make waves" or "not make a scene" are bigger around people, especially your friends) and go with it. It might help if you DO talk to your friends in a non-confrontational / more conversational matter about your opinions. Then, in a given situation, you don't need to worry about what they'll think, and you know who will probably have your back too.

Believe me the more you get your "back up" the more courage you will get. I was always very quiet and kept my opinions to my self. THEN I went to a women's march in Washington DC. Everything changed after that! That is where I learned about strength in numbers!

I always hear people saying "thats so gay" and usually I speak up and tell them calmly that I am gay and then I ask if they have a problem with me? It's tough to stand up at first but then it gets easier with time. It becomes apart of you. be clear, be diligent, but most of all be happy with what you are sticking up for is far more expansive than you could have ever dreamt

Just voice your opinion. Anyone who would look at you negetively for being pro-gay isn't a person you want to be around.
