Spanos better have a real ace up his sleeve. Especially considering he let Wade Phillips AND Cam Cameron "get away". So who do you think his "mystery" pick for coach is. And I am praying he's got one. Pete Carroll? Doubtful. Bill Parcels? You tell me.

the timing was really, well, IGNORANT. Check out this quote

"When I decided to move ahead with Marty Schottenheimer in mid-January, I did so with the expectation that the core of his fine coaching staff would remain intact," Spanos said in a statement"

Did Spanos really think he was going to keep his staff intact? Like everyone is going to stick around for one more season with a lame duck coach when they have job security on the other side of the fence.

For the next guy, I'd have to say Rivera or Singletary would be the front runners.

The name that makes the most sense would be Pete Carroll. I don't think they would have dumped Schot had they not had someone locked up. Now that all incoming Freshman players have been locked up for USC, Carroll is free to jump ship without pulling a Petrino this year.

The other issue is the Rooney Rule. The Rooney Rule states that each team must interview at least one minority candidate for a head coaching position. Even if Spanos has a contract with Carroll's name ready to sign, he couldn't announce it without first compiling a "search" to comply with the Rooney Rule.

I don't know who else he's been sniffing around besides Carroll. I'm suprised that Rivera hasn't gotten a shot at a head coaching position. However, I don't see him going to SD for two reasons:

1) The 4-3 in Chicago, the 3-4 in SD
2) He's a defensive guy. With a young QB in Rivers and the best all-around player in the league in LT, I think SD is going to go after an offensive minded coach.

Hence, no Rivera. Maybe Marty Morningwheg? Or is there some sort of rule about having back to back Marty's.

Also, I think Smith is gone in May. He's done.

For all the great moves the Chargers have made in the past few years....this one negates them ALL. Seriously. It's shady, low-class, and quite frankly, leaves the Chargers in a messy situation. I guess as a Giants fan I should be happy since you guys totally pulled the wool over our eyes in '04 with the Manning/Rivers deal (not your fault, ours really for salivating over Manning), but I feel bad for Schottenheimer. Unless the Chargers pick up Bill Parcells this is a lose/lose situation.

Yeah that sucks. I hope they had there eyes on someone else before they made the decision to give Marty his walking papers. Honestly, I think Marty will be back because who else can they hire?

Dumb, Dumb, Dumb. I guess I can now see why Archie didn't want to see his boy Eli go to that organization
