i own a repair shop, and actually ever since they came out with computer controlled ignition ,its not really a governor, its proper name is a rev limiter ,it keeps from blowing the engine up,you cant actually put it on the floor and hold it ,because it will cut in and out,but they have had these for a while now, there getting more complicated now though, used to you could change the computer chip, and by-pass it,but now its not a part of the chip, but the computer its self, good luck,i hope this help,s.

I will re-state what another said that you may know the truth. On the newer cars, controlled by computer, they put rev limiters. Those are not to be confused with governors. Governors operate mechanically to control RPM. Rev limiters operate based upon sensors and a program in the computer. They behave differently as well. The accelerator pedal acts much like a governor. The speed is mechanically controlled, yet it is not a governor as the speed is varied through the same control.

Actually, not every car has a governor. There are plenty of cars that will rev way past red-line and the only rev limiter is the guy with his foot on the gas. As for police cruisers, it probably just depends on the specific car and how new or old it is. I know my cousin's old LT1 Chevy Caprice was REALLY powerful for a huge car. If it was governed, you would never know it.

They aren't governors at all. The engines will rev. freely past red line. I think you mean computer controlled ignition chips which will not allow the car to go any faster than a pre-programmed speed. Some cars will go much faster than others depending on the programed speed MPH.

well, when did they start delay wipers? those are controlled by a governor
governor is not an exact term.
if you mean a top speed limiter, that started when the manufacturers went to electronic engine controls.
mid 80's
theres a governor under some carbs to limit the air they can suck in, but just for races so its fair.
