I don't want to get my period on a certain weekend, so I started taking my next pack of pills during the sugar pills of the month prior. Was that the right way to do it?

If you have a monophasic pill, yes. (Monophasic pills are the ones that all have exactly the same doses in each pill.) Just be sure to finish all the pills in the new pack. I do this every other month with no problems.
If you have a multiphasic pill (where each week has different doses), then still finish the whole pack, but watch for breakthrough bleeding. Multiphasic pills are not as reliable for skipping periods and the monophasic ones are.
