Both previous answerers are mistaken, at least about how it works in the US. (Other countries award an M.Phil. differently.)

An M.A. is a Master of Arts degree, and is a two year degree in a specific field of study in the humanities or social sciences (and sometimes in the arts).

An M.Phil. is a degree awarded to students in doctoral programs right after they complete their qualifying exams, and before they write and defend their dissertations.

In other words, you cannot apply for an M.Phil. program. You must apply for either an M.A. or Ph.D. program.

MA is a Master of Arts M.Phil is a Master of Philosophy. I'm guessing the M.Phil will focus on philosophical theories quite a bit, but I don't know for 100% certain.

They would have a different focus. M.A. would be a lot more general as a M.Phil. would be more specific.
