Well, let's find out what may be making you constipated.

Are you on any narcotics (pain relievers such as Vicodin, Percocet, Morphine, etc.)?
Narcotics are infamous for reducing intestinal motility. The feces have too much water absorbed from them in the large intestine and become harder, making it much harder to pass. If this is the case, then a prescription stool softener should be prescribed by your physician.

Do you get excercise?
Mechanical stimulation such as jogging or even walking is known to stimulate passage of the bowels.

Do you get enough water?
Dehydration can lead to constipation.

What is your fiber intake?
Fiber intake is good for solid stools.

Now it could possibly be a fecal impaction meaning that a segment of stool in your intestines have harden and gotten stuck in place for some reason. This causes a build up of stool to collect in your intestine. If this is the case, then a laxative should NOT be taken. It would only cause diarrhea to work its way around the impaction. I know this is uncomfortable, but you may have to digitally stimulate the bowels yourself. Put a glove on and start scooping the feces out as tolerated without excessive force.

If your abdomen is increasing in gurth, you must see a physician.

A friend of mine had the same problem the doc told her to take a laxative and put her on a stool softener, to keep her stools soft. He also told her to eat 2 apples a day. This can be a start to help you get regular.
