The one zone valve is the problem. Check the zone in the timer for power. It will read 24 volts if the power is on. If so, check the start and run times on the timer. If you can't fix it by correcting time setings, then the timer needs to be replaced.
More likely the valve is stuck open. Find out which valve is open, either by listening to it or feel which one has the water rushing through it. Turn the water off, open the vavle, it will be either bolts, or screws that hold it down, or the top will scew off. If there is a rock or dirt in there then remove it and put the valve back together and turn the water on to check it. If you found nothing in there or it is still open, then rebuild the valve. If you know what valve it is, then go to your local sprinkler supply house and buy a new one. (about $25). Home depot only has a very limited selection of Toro and orbit valves and Lowes has a small section af rainbird valves. If you can find one at one of those stores, then it should be less than $15. There is usually only 3 parts in the valve, so don't be afraid to open it. From top to botom they are, the spring, the diaphram (the rubber piece),the divider(the hard plastic round piece). It is alot easier to rebuild the valve, just replace the internal parts, than it is to replace it. If you are unsure about anything, just remember if you don't try to fix it, you will call someone anyway. Just make sure to keep anything from falling in the valve. Just dig up around it. It isn't as hard as it sounds. Just make sure if you have to take the solenoid (the piece on top with the wires) off, you don't lose the plunger inside. If it falls out, put the spring back in first then the plunger. The odd looking side will face the valve.

I am assuming your irrigation system also uses Hunter anti-siphon valves. These valves are opened and closed by solenoids, which means they had to receive current once to switch on, and will need to receive another dose of current to shut off. For now, since the Hunter valves have manual shut offs, you will need to shut off the two running zones manually. As far as the controller, once you get the valves shut off, you should try resetting the controller, if it has a reset function, and reconnecting it, and see if it functions normally. What I suspect is that the workers shut off a circuit breaker, cutting power to your controller, so they would would be safe in digging in the event they struck an underground utility line. Then turned the power back on after they were done, and this was the source of the current that switched on some of your sprinklers.

If you can figure out which valve controls the water in that section you could hook up a volt meter to the wires to see if they are getting voltage when it is suppose to be off. Most valves operate on low voltage like 24 volts. If it still has voltage it could be the control box if its programed right. The water valve could have got a piece of dirt stuck in the valve, you might try opening and closing the valve manually at the valve control that's usually on the valve itself.Good luck.

Pull the wire for that circuit at the control panel. That way you know there is no signal reaching the valve. Did that solve the problem? If so, the problem is in the panel or timer; if not, the valve is stuck.open.

you have a bad zone valve. find where your valves are and you will hear the busted one running. you will have to shut the water off at the meter and replace the valve. they are typicaly either 3/4" or 1" and you can change them with any general type valve. very easy repair
