Awesome question!

At the point that radio/TV started becoming big, news was already popular. Newspapers such as the New York Times were already around for maybe 50 or so years, and thus radio/TV was seen as a medium to bring news to people much more rapidly and "live". After TV stations started, news followed right after because it was something people wanted to watch and cheap to produce.
