Sleep is a natural periodic state of rest for the mind and body, in which the eyes usually close and consciousness is completely or partially lost, so that there is a decrease in bodily movement and responsiveness to external stimuli. During sleep the brain in humans and other mammals undergoes a characteristic cycle of brain-wave activity that includes intervals of dreaming.

Sleep gives your body a rest and allows it to prepare for the next day. It's like giving your body a mini-vacation. Sleep also gives your brain a chance to sort things out. Scientists aren't exactly sure what kinds of organizing your brain does while you sleep, but they think that sleep may be the time when the brain sorts and stores information, replaces chemicals, and solves problems.

In my Psych class a theory we were taught on why we sleep is so that our brain can process the different things that went on in the day and store it in different "files". That's why something that you heard, experienced, read, and other things like that sometimes appear in a dream. Our dreams also appear in a sort of storyline because our brain is trying to make sense of the memories that it is reviewing.
