In the online store, controller icons next to the game image indicate which controllers will work with it. For older NES games, the Wiimote will do. For later games, the classic controller or GameCube controller will do. I've heard, though, that the classic controller feels better with these games - they weren't designed for the GC controller, and it doesn't feel quite right sometimes, the way the buttons end up getting mapped.

If you're going to be playing a lot of these games, I'd recommend biting the bullet and getting the classic controller.

When you shop for games on the wii internet system, you will see if the game is wii mote compatible, or if you'll have to use the classic controller.

no u cant, i always wondered why there are so many mods on the Wii yet no1 found a way to connect the classic to the USB port, such a wast of battery using the wand.
