I think seeing the specialist is a good idea. I would suggest a high water intake, avoid caffeine and soda drinks, increase in dietary fibre, you can get this in drink form to assist. Prunes, and dried fruits will assist, prune juice and vegetables. good luck. As you said you have taken medications in the past, I havent suggested these, as it is possible to become tolerant to same, depending on how often you have been taking them, and what you have been taking.

Well, first of all, I'm glad to hear you are going to a specialist. Being on an HMO, when I tried to tell my doc that I was not going for two week stretches at a time, he quickly told me to try stool softeners, and ran out of the room. LOL So that's where I was going to share my experience with you. DO try "Stool Softeners", They can make things a little easier on you once that two week old bowel movement decides to make it's grand appearance. :o( It isn't fun!
One piece of advice from someone who has been there...DO NOT take any of those over-the-counter, *stimulant* type laxatives out there....I don't care if they claim to be gentle...they're not! Not Ex-lax, not the "Women's" brands (Correctol, etc...) I made that mistake *once* and spent an uncomfortable night hunched over on the toilet...never again. And I do mean never! I think child-birth was less painful.( And my first baby was 10 lbs 3 oz)
Just take into account the effect that shaking a bottle of champagne to force out the cork...except imagine that pressure building on your already tender and bloated abdomen!
I've taken every precaution to be tactful here. I hope I have not offended anyone! It's a touchy subject, but it can cause some very real pain! I know how it feels, so I hope that I've helped in some small way. At least till you've had a chance to visit your doc.
Good luck, and feel better!

These 2 products aren't "emergency" cures, but they are pleasant alternatives to incorporate into your daily regimen instead of medicine:
Citricil - an orange flavored fiber laxative that you mix with a glass of water a couple of times a day. Don't skip a day and take it according to the directions, including drinking an additional glass of water after you drink the mix. You need to drink it sort of fast because it doesn't dissolve really well, BUT it tastes good, like the Tang orange drink. If you use this stuff every day, it really works, but it takes 3-4 days to start working at first. You can find this stuff in the laxative section of Walmart. And although it says "fiber laxative", it isn't the medicine kind that you can get hooked on.
Activia yogurt by Dannon - - - 1 or 2 of these little servings a day will fix you right up in no time, and they guarantee it to work. I can certainly vouch for it myself and I was very impressed. I hope you like yogurt, and even if you don't, you can down a small serving in about 3 or 4 bites. They have several great flavors and you can find it in the dairy section of your grocery store.

Read this.
If you have ever experienced constipation, you know how uncomfortable it can make you feel. In addition to the discomfort constipation causes, the clogged waste in your system can also lead to a host of other physical problems. These include nausea, headaches, fatigue, flatulence, sleep disorders, and loss of appetite.
To help cleanse your colon when experiencing constipation, you can add more fiber to your diet. You can also try drinking certain juices, particularly prune juice, to aid in promoting good function of the colon.
In order to prevent constipation from occurring in the first place, try drinking plenty of water. Hydration can lead to constipation. As such, you should also avoid drinking liquids that dehydrate the body, such as coffee, colas, and alcohol. Avoid overeating foods such as cheese, meat, and eggs as the high fat content tends to lead to constipation. Regular exercise will also help keep your bowels moving and will prevent constipation as well-toned muscles simply function better. Taking a laxative will do you you more harm than good. Seeing a specialist is not the solution.
Unfortunately, eating a high fiber diet isn't enough to maintain good colon function or cleanse it on its own. In order to accomplish this, you will need to use a specially designed product such as Oxy-Powder®. Oxy-Powder® is 100% natural and contains no artificial hormones, fillers, or additives. During the initial cleansing phase, you will need to stay close to the bathroom since the supplement literally liquefies fecal matter in order to remove it. This is not the same as diarrhea, which is caused by viral infection in the digestive tract. After this initial phase is complete, however, you will have regular bowel movements while still using Oxy-Powder®. You can use Oxy-Powder® for an occasional colon cleanse or you can use it regularly in order to help maintain a smoothly working digestive system. By maintaining a healthy colon, you will find yourself feeling healthier all over! I use it every other day. RC

Try one of those Citrate of Magnesia laxatives in the small green bottle in the drug store or grocery, you might need 2. But I guess not now since you are going to dr. tomorrow.
Also try eating all bran cereal a large bowl before going to sleep.
Also you MUST drink 8 to 10 glasses of water daily or the fiber won't do any good.

This could be from a low thyroid condition, so be sure and ask for a thyroid test. Drink water, whole grain cereals, fruits and vegs. Try an occassional enema for short term relief. Lets hope that you don't have an intestinal blockage. Best wishes
