On an inbounds pass can the offense player have one foot in backcourt and one foot in frontcourt straddling the midcourt line to receive the pass and it not be backcourt violation and does it matter whether the inbound team is on a particular side of the midcourt line when the pass is thrown in?

I want to clarify where the ball is inbounded on the sideline. If the ref hands the ball to the inbound passer on the backcourt side of the midcourt line then any pass in to the front or back court is legal regardless where the offense player is standing but if inbound passer is in frontcourt on the sideline can the offense player straddle the line with the ball,,I think not,,let me know your answers

in terms of backcourt violations, the referee only needs to watch when BOTH feet of the dribbler pass the halfcourt mark. therefore, the dribbler can put one foot past midcourt and not be whistled on for backcourt violation. but if the player flirts too much with the line, they might be called for an eight second violation (not getting the ball passed midcourt under 8 seconds).
the inbound team has no particular side they need to be on. otherwise, full court press would be illegal for the defense. the only situation where the inbound team can't be behind the midcourt line is when a team is called on a backcourt violation themselves.
example: if team 1 gets called for a backcourt, team 2 cannot inbound it behind the backcourt line or that'll also be a backcourt violation.
every other situation is fine.

It's not a backcourt assuming both feet are down when the pass is caught. You can catch the ball anywhere on the court when inbounded on the sideline at the NCAA or pro level. The only way it would become backcourt is if you caught the ball with the backcourt foot raised then dropped it in the backcourt or if you pick up your frontcourt foot first when straddling the line. You are considered to be in the process of moving to the frontcourt when straddling and must make your first movement to be your backcourt foot to the frontcourt.

In high school and college the player can straddle the midcourt line and not be called for a backcourt because legally he can go in the backcourt. In the NBA I dont believe the player can go in the backourt if the team is taking out the ball in the frontcourt.

There is no backcourt violation on an inbounds pass, as long as you don't touch the ball before it goes into the backcourt.
So, the scenario you described would be legal.

As long as the ball itself has not crossed the mid court line and the pass is being made towards the team in possession's basket, it is not a back court violation.
On any inbounds play-even one from a team's own baseline, the ball may be thrown across the mid court line on that play.

Don't listen to that guy. You ca straddle the line. You have to establish your whole body and the ball in the front court, in order for it to be a backcourt violation.

No you can not straddle the line. That is a back court violation. The only way any feet at all can be backcourt is if thats where your throwing the ball in. Other than that, that's it.

No. The ball can be thrown into the backcourt at any time, except when the ball is being inbounded directly underneath the basket.

ok in the NBA yes you can straddle the line, you have to have the ball and both feet in the backcourt for it to be a violation, but you cant pass it back there, but in college and below, you can pass it back there, and the straddling of the line goes the same way...both feet and ball over for it to be called
