No, it was not called for ...based on his win/loss record. However, that is not all there is to it. He had a well known dysfunctional relationship with the GM, and both of his coordinators left, and he had one year left on his contract. Faced with the reality of at least 3 major coaching changes in 2 years, the president decided to throw it all on the table at once, sacrifice one season instead of 2. I liked Marty when he was in KC, and I think he is a great coach. I don't think that he deserved this, but I understand the other side. Having coached at the college level for 2 different universities, I know the politics involved that most folks never realize.

This should not be a surprise. Marty and the GM have had a very contentious relationship for a while. The owner after the season ended could have been more supportive of Marty but was not. Over the next few days I'm sure more aspects of the story will appear, but if you owned the Chargers, what would you do. You have a GM who has brought in some fantastastic talent, and you had a head coach who could not get along with the GM and who has a terrible playoff record. Marty did not make great decisions in the game against the Pats the Chargers lost. I'm surprised the Chargers did not let him go sooner. I have to wonder if they did not want Dallas or Arizona or Pittsburgh to have a chance to sign him?

The Chargers were mad about the loss of the assistant coaches. Looks like team could be in trouble now.

I don't think he was fired. If he was, it would've been all over ESPN and NFL Network.
