Has the Union of States served its purpose? Should it be dismantled as the Soviet Union was, allowing different regions to follow their own paths rather than forcing them all to share a single government?

What? Why would the US dissolve. It would only weaken us. For an example of a the "success" of states being their own country, check out the South during the Civil War. They were much weaker than the North, because they were separate. As the old saying goes, together we stand, divided we fall. With your logic, maybe Italy should break back up into several nations like pre-WWI.

A house divided cannot stand. So, no. The individual components of the former Soviet Union are considered nowhere near the power they once were.

It would be alot of change and possibly even a depression in poorer states. But who knows - after the transition period, the majority of the states might be better off. Maybe we should ask California - I think they dropped out of the Union a long time ago...
