I recommended The Thirteenth Tale to a friend of mine because we both liked Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. I had heard that they were very similar in style and he agreed. So if you liked Thirteenth Tale, you might try Shadow of the Wind. Stephen King once called it one of the best books nobody's heard of. I'm doing the best that I can to get the word out, though...

I love White Oleander! I recommend that, too. Also, the prequel to the Boleyn Inheritance is The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory, and it's being made into a movie. I read it over the holidays and enjoyed it. It's about Anne Boleyn's sister, Mary, who was originally King Henry VIII's mistress before Anne was. Anne took over while Mary was pregnant, which hurt Mary a lot, but Mary still had to help her keep the king interested for the good of their family. It's an interesting new perspective, romantic, and exciting.

I would suggest "The secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" for the dysfunctional side.
I always recommend
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
The Amber Chronicals by Roger Zelazny
and
The Foundation Series by Asimov

The Kitchen God's wife. The Joy Luck Club. Both by Amy Tan, both about disturbed mother-daughter relationships and awful secrets.

Here are a couple books I thought were good and along the lines of what you're looking for:
- The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon: Book about a 15 year old with autism who's searching for whoever killed his neighbor's dog. It's told in his point of view, which is somewhat bitter and to the point. Great book. http://www.amazon.com/Curious-Incident-Dog-Night-Time/dp/1400032717
- Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold: a really interesting book told in the point of view of a teenaged girl who was murdered and is now in heaven looking down. http://www.amazon.com/Lovely-Bones-Novel-Alice-Sebold/dp/0316666343
