Educate yourself. Watch a few conservative news channels like Fox, and an equal number of liberal news channels like MSNBC. Go to the website of each candidate and skim what they have to say--while it won't be the whole truth, it'll tell you what they think is important to mention. Go to this website:

To see how the candidate has voted or spoken about different issues in the past, and decide how you feel on said issues--pro life, or pro choice? For a ban on gay marriage, or against it? Etc.
It sounds like it'll take a lot more time than it will--a couple of hours on the computer, and you'll be a lot more sure of yourself.

Read all the stuff thier handlers don't want you to see.
See how much mud they feel the must sling at thier opponents in order to look better than them.
Ignore all "sound byte" responses to questions.
