I can tell you that most of what is written about that prophecy, is not what most Mayans alive today are saying. Here is what I discovered the Mayans believe.
The Mayan Indians regard their beliefs as both a science and a religion. Their discoveries are not done in a lab but rather by tapping into the cosmos via the mind. Through the extensive use of meditation, they are able to discover and track planetary movements as well as space anomalies such as black holes. They used this information to construct a calendar so accurate that no present day calendar can rival its accuracy. They also use this information to predict future events.
According to some Mayans, this date marks the end of the long count of their calendar; Set to end on a winter solstice (12-21-12). On this date, our Solar system will be center aligned , in the Milky Way, ninety degrees relative to the black hole, at its center. Our sun will be centered in a position called "The Tree of Life", as it does every 25,800 years. We exit the age of Pisces and enter the age of Aquarius.
In this position, unusually violent sun spot activity will cause a pole shift. Earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods will run ramped. Significant loss of life will occur. Earths magnetic field will temporarily collapse. Humans will be exposed to a cosmic energy that will facilitate enlightenment. In this state of higher consciousness, we will recognize that all matter, plant, animal, mineral are bound as one. This realization will mark the end of wars for a time. People will be able to connect to the essence of god (vibrating energy) like only the most enlightened can. We will have exited the forth dimension and entered the fifth dimension.
The date marks a goal to be reached. Evil forces will make every effort to keep humanity from reaching the date. These evil forces are those entrenched in the third dimension, in the Material world. They have no desire to leave this age and wish to continue exploiting and endangering all life for material gain.
Wars just prior to this date could be most devastating, with a loss of as much as 2/3 of our population anticipated. The resulting man made environmental damage could make life inhospitable for those who survive.
Humans have freewill, Man's future is not set yet, nor predictable:

I know very little about the Mayans. However, just because they predicted some eclipses and earths movement mean nothing. I can pick up a Farmers Almanac and tell you when all the eclipses will be. That doesn't mean I would belive Farmeres Almanac if they had a specific date in mind for the end of time. A person of average intelligence can tell when the next eclipse will be. Evertything to do woth the sun, moon stars, etc. , is a pattern. Its totally predictable. As far as when the end of time will be? I have no idea, and am not concerned about it. Live everyday to its fullest. Tell loved ones you love them. Treat people right. Live with a high degree of morals. That way, no matter when the end comes, you will not be found wanting. Have a great day!!!

This is the year the Mayan callendar ends.
I just got back from a trip to Mayan country in Mexico. We saw the ruins at Progresso and Belize. I even got to climb one and it was awesome. The guide told us about the Mayan Calendar and that for the Mayans it end for their calendar cycle on that approxiamate date. They believe that is the end of their rule and that the world would change not end.
They were very superstitious expecially about our heavenly bodies like the Sun, Moon and other Planets. During Eclipse and total darkness they thought the world was ending because the Gods were angry and putting them in darkness.
During droughts they felt the Gods were punishing them with no rainfall and so they sacrificed many men to the Gods by cutting off their heads at the top of the Pyramid and rolling them down the stairs to the bottom. Blood Letting was common and showed strength and service to the Gods.
The mix of races between the Mayans and the Spanards gave us the Mexican. Many you can still see the likes of their Mayan ancestors in their faces and their temperment. They are a strong proud people who have evolved for centuries to mix with the Europeans in North America.
If you really want to worry about when the Earth will End look at Sylvia Brownes book, "Prophecies". She is a world renown psychic and she is bothered about the fact that she can not predict anything for the future past the year 2052. Could it be that is the end of the World? Could it be the ancient Mayans got one digit wrong and their calendar was meant to end 12-23-2052?
Not something I want to worry about, do you?

Good Morning
so happens I have a degree in History, specialization in Ancient cultures, and also have extensive archaeological training.
This question is a misconception.
Its true the calender ends in 2012, its true its a fabulous calender
but its not true that WE KNOW that it carrys a message about the end of the world in 2012. It simply stops there- after all, it was made 2000 year ago- it had to stop somewhere!

this may not be a detailed answer becuase this will be from what i remember from watching a program on the end of the world on TLC 6 years ago, but: on 12/21/12, the mayan calender ends. this is not necesarily the end of the world, but i think its the end of an age, or era.
the mayans do not believe that the world will end, since there is not mayan civilization anymore, its just the end of their calender. unlike the current calender, theirs has a definite end.

The calendar merely ends. There is no accompanying story from the Maya about an end to the world at that time.

they predicted many things, like eclipses and movements of the earth and moon. it won't be the "end of the world" but the "end of the world as we know it." i guess it could be true cuz of their other prediction which were very accurate.
