The planning for the war wasnt poorly planned. The marines and army had the fastest inland assualt in history against the Iraqi army. But the failure to stop the insurgancy after the war was poorly planned. I think McCain and a few generals said something about that during the beginning of the war to stop the insurgancy with a troop surge early on in for security reasons, which we did not do

Well, in truth, no millitary Power wants an all out war, Howevr seeing the circumstances around the iraq war and its implications for the nation security of this country and internationla security of the world, they had no choice. Now what about the semingly poor planning? its nteresting to Note that we are in a war against an enemy we have never faced head on so to speak. in this war the canvas is continually changing and we have to adapt as the situation requires.

No true military man wants to go to war. That being said they are professionals and will provide the best plans for whatever it is they are tasked to do. If there was poor planning it came from the politicians.

Yes many didn't want it, but the blame for the poor planning lies with Rumsfeld and Cheney mainly -- due Rumsfeld's wanting to do it on the cheap and both of them having no concept of what the aftermath would be like. They rejected plans that didn't fit their preconceived notions and also got rid of generals who didn't agree with them.
