Which came first the Star Wars movies or the books?

This will help to settle an argument between my husband and myself.

What's the copyright date on the books?

I remember reading the book before the movie was released. I'm talking Episode 4, "A New Hope". It was about 6 moths after I read the book before the movie was released, but all along the movie was known to be coming out. THis was not a situation where there was a popular book, and somoene made a movie about it. It was a concept for a movie by Lucas all along. No doubt the book was released after the movie was well into production, but also before the movie was actually released.

In a way this is almost "which came first the chicken or the egg?" question.

It used to be that the story was published as a book and released at the same time as the movie. I remember books of "The Jerk", "The Pink Panther Strikes Again", "Benji" and "Oh! Heavenly Dog." All of these featured photos from the movies on the cover. My own copy of the "Star Wars" paperback features 8-16 pages of color photos from the movie.

Once the first "Star Wars" movie hit it big, there was a rush to get as much product out as possible-including the "Splinter Of The Mind's Eye" and the Han Solo/ Chewbacca adventures.

How embarressing on a argument of such a insignificant thing. Obviousy the movie came first and then the books. I don't mean to be rude but most of the Star Wars books are Expanded universe anyways. Goosh, omg, i thought that was @ least obvious.

the movies were written as script, and production began before the books were released, but the book for episode 4 was released slightly before the movie for episode 4
