It is a really cute story about a princess that turns into a frog. E. D. Baker's main character, Princess Emma (short for Esmerelda) is an only child that is smart, independent and funny. She is a bit of a "tom-boy" that enjoys spending time in the swamp that is on the grounds of her family's castle and with her Aunt Grassina who happens to be a witch. Emma's mother, the Queen is very critical of her and disapproves of her most of the time. She doesn't think that she is feminine enough and doesn't act properly for a Princess. Her father is far more accepting and seems to love her exactly as she is, but we see far less of him.
Emma was transformed into a frog, when she met and kissed Prince Eadric, who had been transformed into a frog by an ill-intentioned witch. It was a twist on the old fairy tale plot device, where a kiss by the person's true love would break the spell by the evil witch or fairy. So, instead of breaking the spell as Eadric had hoped, it transformed Emma too. Through the story they work together, get to know each other and discover that there was a curse put on the women in Emma's family by a angry fairy; flowers cause them to become nasty and ill tempered, like Emma's maternal grandmother. Emma's aunt was distracted by the fact that her true love, Haywood had been transformed into an otter. As a result, they were left to figure out how to rescue themselves and to put an end to the curse. It is a delightfully funny and interesting book full of magic and emphasises the importance of friends and family.
